Gnome-Art NextGen 0.6.0 released

July 17, 2008

It’s official: the best program for easily customizing your Gnome desktop is out.

No more scouring of gnome-look.org, manually downloading, and manually dragging the files into the theme window to install and apply. Now, you can just click on a preview, click ‘Apply’ – and let the magic of it downloading and installing do it’s work. That’s right – just two steps. Amazing.

The program handles everything from backgrounds, to the look of the programs, window border, splash screen, and the login screen. To see a short screencast of the program I did, go here.

Download here. Now, for a quick review.

The Good:

  • Great program flow – works by showing you thumbnails of everything. Select a thumbnail, click Apply, and you got it downloaded, setup, and applied for you.
  • Also supports the advanced options such as looking at a preview (bigger than a thumbnail), choosing the resolution if multiple ones are available, and image type.
  • Easy to install Ubuntu – just download the .deb, double-click on it, click ‘Install Package’, and you’re done.
  • Has a good interface, and it didn’t take long to figure it out.

The Bad:

  • Not polished shiny yet – little quirks in the interface do exist.
  • Doesn’t work sometimes on applying the stuff.
